During the Edo era (1603-1868) the Daishoji Domain (today’s Kaga City area) thrived as a branch of the wealthy and powerful Kaga clan (today’s Kanazawa). Since Kanazawa escaped any damage from wars or major disasters, it retains the townscape of the original castle town. Kanazawa-style samurai culture such as tea ceremonies, Noh plays and sophisticated traditional crafts is still alive in the city today. Kanazawa’s popular tourist attractions including Kenrokuen Garden, Chaya District and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art are gathered compactly in the city centre, where sightseeing may be enjoyed on foot from JR Kanazawa Station.
