Yamanaka Onsen is known as one of the major production areas of lacquerware (shikki, in Japanese). Boasting a 400-year history, the main feature of this regional craft is the artisanal technique of carving wood on a lathe. The Yamanaka Shikki Matsuri Fair is a two-day feast and market event, at which renowned craftsmen and specialized shops gather at a venue at the centre of town. A diverse range of lacquerware is on display, much of it at very affordable prices. In addition, various performances are held on a stage.
