Daishoji is an important historical town for Kaga City area. The atmosphere of Daishoji has been well preserved, and the town has beautiful areas to discover.
The castle town of Daishoji, located west of the Kaga City area, was an important artistic and cultural centre during the Edo era (1603-1868). Today, away from the typical tourist trail, Daishoji holds many surprises for you.
Not far from Daishoji station, you can start your visit at the Soryokan (1), one of the witnesses to Kaga City area’s flourishing past. The opulent building, built at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868) was part of a larger former residence once owned by KUBO Hikobei, one of the wealthiest members of the Kitamaebune guild.
A few minutes’ walk away is a remarkable Buddhist and Shinto complex of temples and shrines, called Yamanoshita Temples Area (2). South of Soryokan is the beautiful Jisshoin temple (3), not to be missed during the cherry blossom season in the spring, or with the red leaves of autumn. Walking further north, we recommend taking a look around the temple of Zenshoji (4) where the famous poet Basho (1644-1694) visited in the 17th century. Known for its splendid buildings and its over 500 small statues of rakan (Buddha's followers and disciples), all of which look different from one another, Zenshoji is a delightful haven of peace.
Following on from the Buddhist complex is a series of charming Shinto shrines (5) on the edge of the forest, and a great opportunity for a walk.
You can end your visit at the Kutani Art Museum (6). Here you can immerse yourself in the art of this refined and complex porcelain. With a history spanning more than three and a half centuries, the museum displays exceptional works of art by the greatest masters.
